POST-DETENTION UPDATE: February 2026

Statement of Gratitude

Over the past several weeks, my life has taken a difficult and unexpected turn. On February 4th, I was detained by ICE and held for 16 days. Those days were heavy, but even amid fear and uncertainty, I felt the strength of a community that refused to let me stand alone.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to every person who fought for my safety and my return to Vermont. My remarkable legal team worked tirelessly and with unwavering commitment. My friends stood with courage and love. The Vermont state congressional delegation and state leaders stepped forward with clarity and conviction. My church family and leadership prayed, organized, and lifted me up with the kind of faith that sustains the weary. Interfaith leaders, UVMMC, and an entire region across New England raised their voices, wrote letters, made calls, and stood together to stop my deportation and protect my life.

To all of you: thank you. Your compassion, your solidarity, and your belief in human dignity carried me through a moment that could have broken me. You reminded me that hope is not an abstract idea; it is something we build together, one act of courage at a time.

As I return to my work with ELOI Ministries, I do so with renewed purpose. I am committed to continuing the mission that has always guided us: creating a community where every person—regardless of their background, journey, or struggle can live with safety, justice, dignity, and hope. Your support has strengthened my resolve to serve with even greater love, humility, and determination.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for saving my life, for believing in my humanity, and for standing with me in a moment of profound vulnerability. I carry your kindness with me, and I will continue working every day to honor the trust and love you have shown.

With deep gratitude and unwavering commitment,

LATEST UPDATE: February 2026 – ICE Detention & Court Hearing

I am deeply disturbed by the aggressive manner in which ICE raided my workplace on February 4th, 2026, with no warning whatsoever, especially given that I had a scheduled check-in appointment just two days later, on February 6th. Officers came to my place of work, shouting and yelling, arresting me before i entered my place of work to begin my day. It was frightening not just for me, but for the patients and colleagues around me. I had followed every rule, attended every check-in, and done everything asked of me.

I was being held at Dover, New Hampshire, pending a court hearing scheduled for Friday, February 20th, 2026 at 11:00 AM. I invite anyone who is able to attend in person and stand with me.
To those who are fighting for me, do not lose hope. There is hope at the end of the tunnel. I hold onto that every day.

I want to express my deepest gratitude, words truly cannot express what I feel, to everyone who has rallied around me:
To those who took to the streets, raised their voices, and demanded my freedom, who stood outside detention facilities, wrote letters, made phone calls, and refused to let my name be forgotten….. thank you. You are the reason I still have hope. Because of your courage and love, our Congressional delegation — Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Peter Welch, and Representative Becca Balint, heard the call and stood up to demand my immediate release. Words will never be enough to capture what that means to a man sitting alone in a detention cell, but please know: every voice, every footstep, every sign held up in the cold reached me and kept me going.

For anyone who wants to learn more about my story, support my case financially, or find details about the upcoming court session, please visit my personal website. Your presence, prayers, and voices mean everything.

There is still a long road ahead — but I do not walk it alone.

July 21, 2025, ICE Check-in

"In that moment, I wasn't an asylum-seeker. I was home."

On Monday, July 21, 2025, I was scheduled for another mandatory check-in with the ICE office in St. Albans. These moments are always filled with a mix of feelings and anxiety, as the outcome is never predictable. As I told Vermont Public radio that morning, if I were to be sent back to Uganda, it would be like sending me to my grave.

However, I was overwhelmed and deeply humbled to see nearly 200 supporters, friends, colleagues from UVM Medical Center, church members, and advocates from organizations like Migrant Justice and the VT AFL-CIO who gathered outside the office to stand in solidarity with me. Seeing so many people there made me feel safer and more secure.

When you are inside that building, you are just a number in a file. But when I stepped through those doors and saw the faces of my friends, my colleagues, my community… in that moment, I wasn’t an asylum-seeker. I was home. A home built not by walls, but by unwavering love and solidarity.

I am relieved and grateful to report that after the meeting, I was released. While it is a huge relief to know that I am going back home and not to a detention center, the journey is not over. My asylum case is still pending, and I am scheduled for another check-in with ICE in October.

Words cannot express my gratitude for the incredible community that continues to surround and support me. Your presence and your voices provide an important shield and send a clear message that we are fighting for justice together. Thank you.

Older Update: On Tuesday 01/21/2025...

On Tuesday 01/21/2025, I was summoned by immigration to appear to them with all my belongings and legal paperwork. I was caught off-guard because my reporting schedule has been once a year and by email and on phone. I had already checked in on 11/14/2024 and a new date of 11/11/2025 had been given to me meaning I had a full year ahead of me.

Based on the immigration atmosphere in the country currently, being summoned abruptly only meant the worst. I want to thank my friends, work colleagues and UVM staff united, our state delegation, organizations like ELOI Ministries, CVRAN, NEKASAN, Migrant Justice among others, media houses like VT digger, WCAX, VT public radio, among others as well as the general Public for all the support and company you gave me to the ICE offices in St Albans. The legal battles are still going on and I kindly call for more support and solidarity.
